Distance
As I think of the capabilities of the digital photograph to record and hold memory, I begin to think of my relationship to the images I have of my home and the people and places that I have loved (and lost). Furthermore, I think about wanting to share my memories from home with my friends through photographs, but always feeling like there's something missing in the way these experiences are shared. And what about time eventually erasing these memories, and at some point, these digital files? After all, the digital image is just a set of mutable numeric information, prone to loss. I think of being able to illustrate distance, time and memory as inherent qualities of an image. Consequently, I wrote an algorithm (with the help of ChatGPT) that adds distance between the pixels of an image based on it's age, and applied it to photographs from my home and of my identity. The results teeter between those of legible photographs and noise.
