Distance
As I think of the capabilities of the digital photograph to record and hold memory, I begin to reflect on my relationship to the images I have of my home and the people and places that I have loved (and lost). I want to share my memories from home with my friends through photographs, but I always feel like there's something missing in the way these experiences are shared. And what about time eventually erasing these memories, and at some point, these digital files? After all, the digital image is just a set of mutable numeric information, prone to loss. I think of being able to illustrate distance, time and memory as inherent qualities of an image. Consequently, I wrote an algorithm, with help from AI, that adds distance between the pixels of an image based on its age, and applied it to photographs from my home and of my identity. The results teeter between legible photographs and noise.
