# Anant Saraf > Anant Saraf is an interdisciplinary artist and technologist in the Brown | RISD dual degree program, studying Computer Science at Brown University and Photography at the Rhode Island School of Design. Born and raised in Kolkata, India and based in Providence, RI, he makes images across photography, sound, installation, and historical and alternative processes, often treating the photographic medium itself as material. His practice moves between the poetic and the technical to explore memory, displacement, and the ways technology reshapes identity, belief, and collective myth. Working with image-manipulation algorithms, obsolete media, and lens-based imagery, he moves between making photographs and making things from them, including systems, objects, sound, and installations that test how images carry memory, belief, and meaning. This site (https://anantsaraf.com/) holds two portfolios: fine art (photography, alternative and historical processes, installation, sound) and engineering (computer vision, computational photography, computer graphics, software engineering). Brown | RISD Dual Degree: CS + Photography. ## Art - [Lossy](https://anantsaraf.com/art/lossy) (2026): Lossy is a social image-sharing platform like Instagram, except that its images degrade every time they are viewed. Comments, direct messages and stories also have their own degradation logic. Users gain points by… - [Distance](https://anantsaraf.com/art/distance) (2025): As I think of the capabilities of the digital photograph to record and hold memory, I begin to think of my relationship to the images I have of my home and the people and places that I have loved (and lost)… - [Belief/Broken Numbers](https://anantsaraf.com/art/belief-broken-numbers) (2024): Could noisy images be showing us phantoms that we cannot yet explain? This work originates from the examination of a young artist's relationship to home, religion, technology, and the South Asian belief that these are… - [Palladium Prints, 2024](https://anantsaraf.com/art/palladium-prints-2024) (2024): Inspired by Father John Misty’s “Total Entertainment Forever”, a song about images, consumption, and the future of both, this work was the result of printing imagery on an antique medium that would be unrecognizable to… - [Large Format](https://anantsaraf.com/art/large-format) (2024): The Large Format Camera is a technological dinosaur- old and obsolete, yet capable of much more than any living animal. Its incredible sluggishness is matched by its unparalleled resolution (9), its unwieldiness by its… - [Thank You For Coming/I Love You/Can I Keep You?](https://anantsaraf.com/art/tyfc): Each viewer faces a screen that represents them as a mosaic of every face that has previously viewed the work. The work records and remembers the faces of every viewer that approaches it. The size of each tile changes… - [(Dis)Location/Orientation](https://anantsaraf.com/art/dislocation-orientation): "The incessant flow of digital imagery creates a fragmented reality, where the boundaries between the virtual and the real are increasingly blurred, leading to a sense of perpetual dislocation... Our engagement with… - [Experiments With Noise](https://anantsaraf.com/art/experiments-noise): Still in their initial stages, these experiments with noise create all noise 'organically'- a result either of very high ISO or of increasing exposure in post. I think of noise as disorder inherent to the medium, to… - [Nani](https://anantsaraf.com/art/nani): These photographs are a memorialization of my late grandmother and her household. Additionally, I made an audio project that explored the history of India, from its Partition in 1947 to 2022, through the personal… - [Kolkata](https://anantsaraf.com/art/kolkata): When I describe Kolkata to my friends in the U.S., I often say: "Kolkata is one of the few places in the world where, if you ask a shopkeeper to sell you something at 3 in the afternoon, he will tell you to f*** off… - [Analogue Photo](https://anantsaraf.com/art/analogue-photo): A collection of Black and White, 35mm film prints made for my Sophomore Lab class- taken by every Photography major at RISD during the fall of their Sophomore year- at RISD Photo. This was my first time working with… - [Digital Detritus](https://anantsaraf.com/art/digital-detritus): A collaborative project with Maggie Xian during my first year at RISD, Digital Detritus arose as a response to the question- How could we illustrate a realm of 'digital trash', where forgotten memories and redundant… - [New England/New Home](https://anantsaraf.com/art/new-england-new-home): This collection of digital photographs showcases my journey across various projects at RISD and my last 2 years in New England, capturing moments that reflect my exploration and adaptation to them as my new home. From… - [Wishy Washy](https://anantsaraf.com/art/wishy-washy): For my inaugural design project at RISD, "Wishy Washy," I delved into the feelings that come with being an international college freshman, and the sense of disorientation that often accompanies this transition. Since I… - [Self-portraits](https://anantsaraf.com/art/self-portraits): A collection of photographic self-portraits. - [Experiments with Form](https://anantsaraf.com/art/experiments-form): A collection of images borne out of experiments with time, color, or abstract photographic forms. - [Red- Color Study](https://anantsaraf.com/art/red-color-study): A sophomore year project meant to study the emotive powers of the color red. Made as I thought about the after hours of the night, intrusive thought, and how I sometimes feel like I am being swallowed by the red light… - [Pollution at Lake](https://anantsaraf.com/art/pollution-at-lake): A series of images documenting Pollution at Rabindra Sarobar Lake, Kolkata. With the use of digital color manipulation techniques, I attempt to change the visual of the pollution at the lake I documented- something… - [Real Cloud/Fake Cloud](https://anantsaraf.com/art/real-cloud-fake-cloud): Half of these clouds were generated using NVIDIA Canvas, and the other are 'real' photographs of clouds made black and white. Can you tell them apart? Made in January 2023 at RISD's 'Tools Upside Down' wintersession. ## Engineering - [Engineering portfolio](https://anantsaraf.com/engineering): I love digital images! And I love making software that deals with them, whether to make images from scratch (Graphics), make them more beautiful (computational photography) or to extract meaningful information from… - [Lossy](https://lossyimg.vercel.app/): A social-network app where, every time your image gets more viewers, it degrades in quality. Every view applies an incremental degradation step (JPEG recompression, CLAHE contrast shifts, noise injection, pixel… - Comp Photo Coursework: Coursework in computational imaging — coarse-to-fine Lucas–Kanade optical flow, HDR radiance merging with saturation-aware weighting, and planar/cylindrical panorama stitching with RANSAC-robust alignment. - Ocean Eddy Detection Pipeline: End-to-end SAR computer vision pipeline to detect ocean eddies in open water and marginal ice zones — packaged as a reproducible, config-driven workflow usable by non-technical domain experts. All a user has to do is… - Ray Tracer: C++ ray tracer built from scratch — designed the renderer architecture and implemented ray generation, intersections, shading, and recursive reflections. - Real-Time Graphics Renderer: End-to-end real-time OpenGL pipeline — GPU instancing, shading, post-processing, and a custom LUT — merged with three collaborators' subsystems during an integration phase. - [Gaussian Splatting Pipeline](https://github.com/anant-saraf/cv-gaussian-splat): 3D Gaussian Splatting pipeline in PyTorch for differentiable 3D reconstruction — defined model structure, initialized parameters, and optimized end-to-end. - Lung Segmentation + Disease Classification: Repeatable training and evaluation pipeline for chest-X-ray lung segmentation, working under small-data and label-quality constraints.
